In 1995, in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, a group of martial arts teachers met to brainstorm what name would best describe their traditional system of teaching a complete, comprehensive martial art. Master Doyle Perry and Master Daniel Stillson were part of that meeting, where someone suggested the name "United Martial Arts". The name gained nearly immediate consensus and was adopted. It quickly became a popular name and there are now dozens, maybe hundreds, of schools world-wide which call themselves United Martial Arts. We don't know if we were the first to use the name. We do know that it is descriptive of what we offer.
In 1998, the school moved to Arizona and opened United Martial Arts of Phoenix at 32nd Street and Thunderbird. By the year 2001, the school had outgrown that facility and moved to its present location on 32nd Street, just South of Shea.
United Martial Arts in Phoenix is an independent school. We have no ties with any of the many schools throughout the city, state or country which have adopted the name. We are happy to be their friends, but, we are not affiliated with any of them in any way. Nor are we affiliated with any of the "associations" which use the name. This disclaimer is not intended to defame or belittle any of the other schools or organizations; it is only intended to clarify our independence.
Also, our Instructors and students are eligible to be rank certified by the prestigious United States Martial Arts Association, which was founded and headed by the late O'Sensei (Grandmaster) Philip Porter, one of the most respected martial artists in the world today.
